Suspicion of DUI in San Diego Police Chase Results in Death
San Diego DUI Attorney Details NEWS
When Deputy Ken Collier spotted a driver going in the wrong direction, he suspected that this was a case of DUI. But, while the driver of the car, Jose Jasso Lopez, from San Diego, was eventually arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, the charge of vehicular manslaughter was added, as the early morning police chase resulted in death.
Ken Collier, age 39, of Santee, was a Deputy trying to do his job of apprehending a suspected drunk driver. This pursuit, and subsequent deadly crash occurred in February of 2010. Deputy Collier's passenger, Ryan Debellis, was a sheriff’s dispatcher at the time, and managed to survive the crash with bruises. When taken to the local hospital, he was expected to make a full recovery.
The technical cause of the crash and death involved hitting a freeway abutment at the end of the lane being used to pursue the suspect, but looking deeper into this incident, many would agree that alcohol, and driving, on the part of the suspect, may be the true cause of this unnecessary death.
Jose Jasso Lopez, the suspected drunk driver, was virtually half the age of the Deputy killed in the line of duty. Drinking and driving among young adults is more common than one might think. It certainly does not help when celebrity figures, popular role models for youth, are caught doing the same.
Drinking and driving is a serious offense in San Diego, California, and the rest of the country! The potential harm DUI poses extends far beyond the drunk driver.
